Are Kingdom Leaders Showing Up When It Matters Most?

"Because many spiritual care spaces are already being filled— The question is: Who is showing up in them?"

If you look at the changing demographics of spiritual care in hospitals, hospices, and crisis response units, a clear and urgent trend is emerging. Institutions are actively expanding their chaplaincy departments to meet the needs of a diverse, modern public. But as these doors open, they are increasingly being walked through by secular, humanist, and non-Christian pluralistic chaplains who have done the work to meet institutional standards.

Recent demographic shifts show that religiously unaffiliated individuals (often called "nones") now make up nearly 30% of the U.S. population. In response, institutions are eagerly credentialing chaplains from secular and alternative backgrounds because they bring the structural training and certification these high-stakes environments demand. They are doing the work. They are getting certified. They are the ones sitting at the bedsides, in the briefing rooms, and in the crisis centers.

For Christian leaders, this is a wake-up call.

It’s not that institutions are intentionally locking out Kingdom voices. It’s that they do not grant access based on good intentions, sincere hearts, or pastoral titles alone. They grant access based on specialized training, ethical accountability, and crisis preparation.

Chaplaincy is one of the clearest pathways for believers to bring the presence of God into environments where traditional ministry often cannot go. But passion without preparation is no longer enough to get you into the room.

The spaces are actively being filled. The people in crisis are waiting.

The question is: Will you be prepared enough to be the one who shows up?
